Fishing

The pastime that first put Los Cabos on the tourist map is sport fishing. The waters teem with more then 850 species of fish, including several varieties of marlin as well as swordfish, dorado, tuna, wahoo, snapper, cabrilla and grouper.

Dedicated fishing aficionados and novice anglers alike can enjoy a sport-fishing excursion in Cabo San Lucas.

Just about anyone who casts a line can find themselves battling a marlin - ranging from 100 pounds to well over 700 pounds - their first day out. There are more then 500 boats based in the area, and fishing excursions can be reserved through your concierge. A full-day trip averages about $300 per boat, including tackle, bait and food. Half-day excursions in smaller boats range between $80 and $100. Most fishing expeditions leave from the Cabo San Lucas Marina, generally embarking at 7 a.m.

More marlin and swordfish (40,000 a year) are caught and released in the waters off Los Cabos then anywhere else. Although catch-and-release is the common practice (helping to keep the supply so abundant), successful fishermen can opt to have their catch prepared and served to them in a local restaurant or shipped home as a trophy.

While any time is a good time to book a sport-fishing excursion to Los Cabos, the seasoned angler may find a summer in Los Cabos more to their liking. Chances are better for landing blue or black marlin and sailfish. Prime season for the former runs from June through December, while the latter are taken mostly from April through October. Stripped marlin is plentiful year-round.

Water Sports

Those who prefer to swim among fish rather then catching them, will find plentiful opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling - just two of the many ecotourism options that abound in Los Cabos. Dive sites are, for the most part, rated, so divers can choose those which suit their level of experience and interest.

Para sailing, water skiing and jet skiing are readily available at the Marina in Cabo San Lucas.

Wind surfing is another popular sport in the area where the difference in temperature between the ocean and the desert creates a favorable breeze throughout the year. For those who prefer a more relaxed form of sailing, there are small sailing boats or catamarans available for rent.

As with all sports, caution must be exercised. Please, wear the recommended protective gear and avoid alcoholic beverages well in advance of any outdoor activity.

Whale Watching

Year after year the most extraordinary migration known to the world of science takes place around the end of December. This is when thousands of gray whales arrive at the tranquil waters of the lagoons and bays of the Baja California Peninsula.

At the start of the cold season, in the freezing waters of off Alaska, these marvelous creatures feel the need to emigrate and mate. They begin a journey of almost 6,000 miles, traveling at a speed of 4 miles an hour.

This journey ends in the heavenly warm waters around Baja California Sur, where whale cubs are conceived, born and make their debut as the giants of the sea. The excellent climatic conditions, as well as the salinity and shallowness of the water make this one of the most unique maternity wards in the world. This is where the most important phase of the whales' life takes place: their reproduction.

Los Cabos is a prime gray whale watching territory from January to March. Those marvelous creatures can be seen spouting and playing along the coast, close to shore. Depending on the month it is possible to view the mating, calving, nursing or general frolicking of the ballenas (whales).

Various local companies offer whale watching tours both in near by waters and to the nearest calving ground in Magdalena bay, about 150 miles to the north. Your concierge will have a listing of all available trips and will assist you in finding the right one for you.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding for all levels of ability is available at several stables in the Los Cabos area. Guided tours on rented horses are offered at Rancho Collins, just a mile away from the Country Club next to Playa El Medano beach. Venture a little ways out of Cabo San Lucas to Km. 4 of Hwy 1 to find the Red Rose Riding Stables. This stable features private rides for all levels of riders on either Western or English saddles. Reservations are recommended for the mountain and beach trail rides.

The Cuadra San Francisco Equestrian Center is very popular and advanced reservations are advised. This equestrian center offers both desert trail rides and equestrian school. A one or two hour trip through the Arroyo San Carlos or Venada Blanco is a great way to experience the desert and its many mysteries.

You will see many quail, some coyotes, wild horses and rabbits. You will experience the awe of riding through narrow canyons and amazing rock formations. Long pants are recommended for riding, as well as sunscreen and a hat. You will definitely work up a thirst on the ride, bring a water bottle to carry with you.
